5 Steps of a Successful Engine Rebuild

5 Steps of a Successful Engine RebuildIf you love your vehicle, but its engine is failing, then you could consider investing in an engine rebuild. While engine replacement might also be a consideration, it's generally preferable to instead have your existing engine remanufactured by a specialist mechanic. With proper maintenance, a rebuilt engine should run strongly for many years to come. Here's a look at five important steps for a successful engine rebuild.

Remove, Clean, Inspect

The mechanic will start the process by fully removing all engine parts, then disassembling and cleaning them. After the parts have been meticulously cleaned (and in some cases steam-cleaned), they will be inspected for indications of wear and tear. At this point, the parts will be prepared for machining as needed.

Machining

The engine's parts will be machined to regain their smoothness. This will be done along with the following procedures: boring and honing the engine block, grinding the crankshaft, and micropolishing bearing surfaces and chamfer oil passages. Also, connecting rods will be straightened out and joined to rods. And valve seals will be recut and cylinder heads resurfaced. Any other necessary machining will also be completed.

Engine Reassembly

As part of reassembly, the engine will receive new main and rod bearings. Also, a new timing belt and gears will be installed, as well as new seals and gaskets.

Testing

After being fully reassembled, the engine will be tested for correct oiling and compression. If there are any leaks, they will be addressed.

Reinstall

At this point, the engine will be reinstalled in the vehicle and final testing will be conducted. Then, you'll be ready to roll.
